New Polish ID Cards to be Introduced in March
We are officially less than two weeks away from the introduction of a new Polish ID card. The new document that will serve as a proof of one’s identity is going to be issued from the fourth day of March. It will be presented to all people who submit identity card applications after that date. The preparations are at the final stages and the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior who prepared the project say they are ready for the launch.
The Updates on the New Polish ID Cards:
The new version of the piece of plastic that is indispensable for anyone opening a bank account, renting a car or concluding any personal or business agreement, is to be revolutionary. All due to the introduction of a microchip which will be embedded in the document. This new element will store ID holder’s data and will enable the Polish ID card to be used in completely new ways.
The new cards will replace the ones Polish citizens use today. The replacement will be gradual. Old IDs will become expired and new documents will be issued in their place. Polish ID card or documents are valid for 10 years and this is how long the whole process is going to take. If you don’t want to wait until your ID becomes invalid, you may apply for the new version earlier.
The new identity cards will allow citizens to communicate with state and local institutions via internet and sign documents with electronic signature. They will also be used in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. E-IDs will also contain biometric data that will enable face recognition at airports.
Visually, the new documents will not be much different from the ones we use today. The main difference is a barcode which will be placed at the back of the document.
Implications for Banking and Business
Developments in the Polish banking sector affect businesses operating in the country in several ways. Access to corporate banking services, credit availability, deposit rates, and payment infrastructure are all critical factors for companies — whether established Polish firms or foreign-owned entities entering the market.
For foreign entrepreneurs setting up operations in Poland, choosing the right banking partner is a strategic decision. Major Polish banks including mBank, ING Bank Śląski, Bank Millennium, PKO BP, and Santander Poland offer varying levels of service for international clients, including English-language online banking, multicurrency accounts, and dedicated relationship managers for corporate clients.
The Polish banking market is well-regulated by the KNF (Financial Supervision Authority) and participates in the EU deposit guarantee scheme (BFG — Bank Guarantee Fund), providing deposit protection up to EUR 100,000 per depositor per institution. This regulatory framework provides stability and confidence for businesses maintaining corporate funds in Polish banks.
