European Banks Advise Citizens to Hoard Cash Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

In a surprising turn, European financial institutions are now actively encouraging citizens to keep physical cash reserves at home, a clear departure from the global push towards cashless societies. This advice stems from escalating concerns over the vulnerability of electronic banking systems to potential disruptions, ranging from cyberattacks to geopolitical instability.
The Dutch Central Bank recommends holding €200-500 per person, while Sweden’s Riksbank suggests around €170 to cover a week’s essential expenses. This shift in guidance underscores a heightened sense of preparedness, with the Dutch Defense Minister explicitly linking the need for cash reserves to potential threats from Russia.
While Poland’s central bank hasn’t issued similar directives, an uptick in cash withdrawals was observed following a recent Russian drone incident in the country. Alior Bank confirmed a “greater interest in cash,” though not a significant surge, indicating public responsiveness to regional events.
Experts, including survival specialist Lt. Col. Dariusz Paździoch, advocate for even more substantial reserves, suggesting an amount equivalent to a household’s monthly expenses – typically between 3,000 and 6,000 Polish Złoty. The Government Security Center further advises including cash in emergency evacuation backpacks, alongside other crucial supplies.
However, security remains a key concern. Authorities caution against storing large sums in a single location and recommend using safes or distributing cash in multiple secure spots to mitigate theft risks. As international uncertainties mount, physical cash, despite its declining role in daily transactions, is re-emerging as a vital safeguard, highlighting a strategic shift in personal financial preparedness across Europe.
